For Spotify Wrapped: Cake, we filmed the intimate dinner honoring our favorite artists and podcasters and the surprise Spotify had for them 🤩 We knew it was going to be the kind of shoot where if you-blink-you-miss-it. We had zero chance for do-overs. Here’s how we did it.
When it comes to live events, we're not allowed second takes. To get it right, we deployed nearly 30 cameras. A mix of drones, GoPros, handheld cameras, and Insta360s were placed strategically to document the night from every possible angle.
The challenge was to integrate the cameras into the dinner setting without disrupting the flow. One of the most unique setups involved mounting GoPros onto cloche trays, ensuring they moved naturally with the servers. We tested multiple placements to get the best angle, making sure each reveal felt immersive.
Before the actual shoot, we conducted a full technical rehearsal to test camera placements, light conditions, and movement. In a setting where the slightest shift in light could alter the tone, every adjustment mattered. We mapped out how the cameras would track the action to ensure no key moment was lost.
A defining visual of the night was the long table, filmed from overhead by a drone. With minimal lighting, achieving the right exposure was a challenge. In the end, the interplay of subtle shadows and warm glows contributed to the film’s moody, cinematic feel.
